Administrative assistants' files, 1961-1972 and n.d.

This series consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, legal documents, publications, newspaper clippings, and photographs that were maintained as a subject file by the governor's administrative assistants. The series contains material directed to or used by Cecil Jackson, Jr., Jim Solomon, Hugh Maddox, Bill Jones, William M. Nettles, and Robert Cleckler. Jackson, Jones, and Solomon were on the staff of Governor George C. Wallace. Nettles began his career at the end of George Wallace's first term, worked for Governor Lurleen B. Wallace, and eventually became Governor Albert P. Brewer's administrative assistant. Cleckler was Brewer's executive secretary. Hugh Maddox served as legal advisor to all three governors. This series reflects the subjects and issues that were of top priority to the governor. Civil rights court cases and other incidents are featured prominently among the records. Among the obvious civil rights topics are: Martin Luther King, Jr., Selma, Macon County, Lowndes County, Montgomery, integration of schools, voting rights, poll tax, and reapportionment. There is also information on the attempt by civil rights proponents to have the license of Alabama's educational television network revoked. Brewer's legal advisor Richard L. Holmes was involved in settling this dispute. Other issues and events that are documented in these records include the capitol flag program and dedication of the state flags on the capitol grounds, highway and traffic safety, and health care. There is an interesting collection of ca. mid-1960s photographs of county courthouses and the tax collector's office.
